Whether you’re experiencing incontinence for the first time or it’s an ongoing problem, there are some concerns that you may have. In our years of providing products and information to help consumers and their carers with incontinence, there are a few questions we hear frequently.
What is urinary incontinence?
Urinary incontinence is the most common pelvic floor disorder and it involves involuntary urine loss or leakage. The severity and type of symptoms vary widely from person to person. You may leak urine when you cough, sneeze or laugh; or you may experience sudden strong urges to urinate. Some people lose urine during sexual activity. All of these can be managed or treated; urinary and faecal incontinence products for men and women are available to help.
What types of urinary incontinence are there?
The three main types of urinary incontinence are stress incontinence, urge incontinence, and mixed incontinence (where more than one type exists at the same time in the same person). Education, lifestyle changes, medications, and/or urinary and faecal incontinence products for women and men can help with all types of incontinence.
How do doctors diagnose urinary incontinence?
When you see your doctor about incontinence (which you should, to diagnose the problem and its cause), your doctor will probably ask you several questions such as how often you empty your bladder, how often you leak urine, and how much urine you leak. He or she will also most likely want to run several tests such as a urinalysis to check for infection, an ultrasound to provide visual access to the bladder, urethra, and kidneys, and others. Doctors can usually determine the cause of most cases of incontinence.
What treatments are available for urinary incontinence?
Often, all you need to help you manage incontinence is the right urinary or faecal incontinence products for men or women. However, if you’d like to address the problem at a fundamental level, there are various treatments available. These include:
- Behavioural changes.
- Lifestyle changes.
- Physical therapy.
- Medication.
- Pelvic muscle exercises (Kegels).
- Pessary.
- Surgery.
What causes urinary incontinence in men?
Although it’s more common for women to experience incontinence, it does occur in men as well. Incontinence in men may be triggered by nerve damage due to diabetes or stroke, an overactive bladder, or prostate issues (including cancer treatment).
What treatments are available for men?
Just as for women, a variety of treatments are vailable to help men with incontinence. Lifestyle changes, exercises, medication, and surgery are all options. Speak with your doctor about the best choices for you.
