Types of Urinary Incontinence and Buying Incontinence Nappies for Men and Women Online

Poor bladder control in known as urinary incontinence. Incontinence is extremely common and there are several different types. The various types of urinary incontinence have many possible causes; in some cases, more than one type may be present at the same time. Urinary incontinence may be improved or managed through lifestyle changes, medication, and/or the simple use of incontinence nappies for men or women. The main types of urinary incontinence include:

Stress Incontinence

Stress incontinence involves urine leakage during activities that cause pressure on the bladder, such as sneezing, coughing, laughing, or jogging. This type of incontinence in women may be caused by pregnancy and childbirth or lower oestrogen levels during menopause. In men, stress incontinence may develop after prostate surgery. In both men and women, diabetes, smoking, constipation, obesity, or a chronic cough may contribute to the problem.

Urge Incontinence

Also known as overactive bladder, urge incontinence occurs when the bladder sends fullness signals before it is full – or anywhere near. People experiencing this type of incontinence find themselves making frequent trips to the bathroom, often even in the middle of the night. Factors contributing to urge incontinence may include ageing, caffeine, alcohol, constipation, or various medical conditions.

Incontinence Associated with Chronic Retention

Sometimes, the bladder may become incapable of proper emptying and, as a result, the individual may experience symptoms such as constantly feeling the urge to urinate (even right after using the toilet), a slow or weak urine stream, passing urine while asleep, or even frequent urinary tract infections. This may be caused by an enlarged prostate, a urethra blockage, damage to the nerves that control the bladder, and certain conditions and medications.

Functional Incontinence

Functional incontinence is a different type of incontinence not caused by problems with the bladder itself. Rather, this type of incontinence occurs when a person either does not recognise the need to urinate or does not remember or comprehend where the bathroom is. The result is not making it to the bathroom in time or urinating in inappropriate places. The causes of functional incontinence include dementia, poor mobility, poor eyesight, trouble with fine motor skills (being unable to remove clothing quickly enough), depression, or environmental factors such as chairs that are difficult to get out of or poor lighting.
